El Royal Institute of British Architects ha anunciado su selescción de 30 edificios para ser considerados para el Premio Internacional de inauguración RIBA. Según la organización, "Los proyectos van desde grandes proyectos de infraestructura urbana a proyectos residenciales privados; desde programas culturales a espacios cívicos; pasando por edificios académicos y lugares de culto. El Premio Internacional RIBA será otorgado al edificio más significativo e inspirador del año. La obra ganadora demostrará visión, pensamiento innovador y excelencia en su ejecución, al mismo tiempo que hace una contribución especial a sus usuarios y a su contexto físico". Esta es la primera vez que el premio RIBA se encuentra abierto a cualquier arquitecto calificado en el mundo.
En Latinoamérica destacan La Biblioteca de Constitucion del chileno Sebastián Irarrázaval, la Casa de Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, la Nueva Sede de la UTEC de Lima y el Museo JUMEX de Chipperfield en México, mientras que representando a España, se encuentra en la lista el Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, de Francisco Mangado.
Los 30 edificios seleccionados serán visitados durante el verano por el comité de premios RIBA, después de lo cual, la lista se reducirá a 20 ganadores de premios RIBA a la excelencia internacional. Posteriormente, seis finalistas serán elegidos y visitados durante el otoño por un Gran Jurado, que se encuentra dirigido por Richard Rogers e incluye a personalidades como Billie Tsien, Kunle Adeyemi, Philip Gumuchdjian y Marilyn Jordan Taylor .
Para este año inaugural del Premio Internacional RIBA, los edificios que fueron evaluados debían ser completados en un período de tres años (entre el 1 enero 2013 a 1 febrero 2016). Sin embargo en los años siguientes el premio considerará sólo a los edificios terminados dentro de dos años. RIBA ha estado entregando premios de arquitectura desde 1966, incluyendo la Royal Gold Medal, RIBA House of the Year y el RIBA Stirling Prize. El ganador de este último, representará al Reino Unido en el Premio Internacional.
"Estamos encantados con la respuesta a nuestro primer Premio Internacional RIBA, que ha llevado a una amplia gama de proyectos de arquitectura excepcionales de todo el mundo", dijo el presidente de RIBA, Jane Duncan. "Será fascinante ver los diferentes puntos de vista de los jueces y de los participantes acerca del poder y el valor de la gran arquitectura en todas partes del mundo".
